Three women were diagnosed with HIV, the AIDS virus, after receiving “vampire” facials at an unlicensed spa in New Mexico, US.
According to The keeperThese are believed to be the first recorded cases. The first came in 2018, when the New Mexico Department of Health began investigating the resort and discovered that a woman in her 40s had tested positive for HIV despite having no known risk factors.
As a result, the woman reported that she was exposed to needles during a procedure at this clinic. However, while the investigation continued, the clinic closed in 2018, and the owner was sued for practicing medicine without a license. It appears that disposable equipment intended for one-time use has been reused.
The “vampire” facial these women received involves extracting the client’s own blood, separating its components and using tiny needles to inject plasma into the face to rejuvenate the skin.
The government report said this is not the first reported case of possible transmission in beauty establishments, but it is likely the first for HIV.
