A four-month-old baby was left in an alcohol-induced coma after his grandmother diluted the baby’s milk powder with wine in Italy, local press reports.
The woman reportedly mistook a bottle of wine for a dark flask of water while preparing milk.
The grandmother from Francavilla Fontana, in the southern Italian province of Brindisi, gave the formula to the baby late Monday morning. The newborn drank some wine before discarding the bottle.
The family member realized her mistake when she smelled the drink. Realizing the mistake, he immediately took his grandson to the hospital. The boy was intubated and placed in the intensive care unit of the hospital. It is not life threatening.
The local prosecutor has been notified of the case and is reviewing medical records to determine whether criminal charges will be filed.
The police are also aware of this case.
