Attacks on immigrants in Porto could be the answer

The recent violent attacks on citizens of Algerian and Moroccan origin in the early hours of Friday may have been motivated by a spate of robberies that have occurred in recent weeks at Campo 24 de Agosto in Porto. They could even be carried out by racist groups – as many residents and traders in the Bonfim Parish area point the finger at these immigrants who tend to hang out in groups, scaring everyone and everyone.

On the social network X, where videos of attacks carried out between Algerian and Moroccan citizens (some using sticks, pipes and hammers) are circulated, there are those who incite violence. “Let’s run with these people from our country, with the Portuguese people, since our rulers are doing nothing,” it says. But that’s not all: “Due to the resource constraints facing the police, we as citizens will have to make our streets safer through surveillance teams and, where necessary, intervention.”

Four different situations involving Algerians and Moroccans took place in central Porto on Friday. The most serious incident occurred on Rua do Bonfim, when a group of hooded men armed with guns, knives and clubs entered a house and beat up the immigrants. Three were injured.

Rui Moreira: “Very worrying”
“Very worrying. I hope that the authorities will be able to quickly identify the perpetrators and that they will be punished,” said Rui Moreira, president of the Porto Chamber. A local government source told the CM that “he has no authority over matters of public safety,” for which the Ministry of Internal Affairs is responsible. They also indicate that “the Municipal Police, together with the PSP, carries out visibility protection in the most critical areas where there is a strong influx and presence of people, as well as in scenarios of recurrence of criminal phenomena.” .

Luis Montenegro condemns these actions
On social network X, Prime Minister Luis Montenegro has already responded to the racist attacks that occurred early on Friday morning. “I strongly condemn, on my own behalf and on behalf of the Portuguese Government, the racist attacks in Porto. I express our solidarity with the victims and reaffirm zero tolerance for hatred and xenophobic violence. And I praise the work of our security forces,” he wrote. The Police Service has stepped up patrols in this area of the city.

MAI “NOT ALLOWED”

Interior Minister Margarida Blasco said yesterday that the attacks in Porto were “unacceptable”. Our society is not like that, the Portuguese are not like that. Security forces responded effectively and promptly. On behalf of the government, I can say that there is zero tolerance. No to racism.”
