An Australian doctor who was diagnosed with incurable brain cancer about a year ago has used the foundations of his own research into melanoma and achieved unexpected results: the cancer is in remission.
In accordance with Sky News, Professor Richard Scolier, from the University of Sydney, said he was “very happy” after a recent MRI showed there was no sign of glioblastoma (a tumor of the central nervous system) returning.
Skolier became the first brain cancer patient in the world to receive combination immunotherapy before surgery, as he used the results of his own research.
“We have shown that it is possible to activate the immune system, and now this is a fundamental first step in changing the field and the way we research drugs in brain cancer,” said Richard Scolier. Sky News.
Scolyer, along with colleague Georgina Long, a professor at the University of Sydney, were named Australian of the Year.
