Human Rights Watch (HRW) said this Wednesday that extremists linked to Daesh used children to invade and loot the village of Macomia, Cabo Delgado province, northern Mozambique, in an attack on Friday.
The non-governmental organization (NGO) said that “it is unclear whether there will be [crianças] (…) also participated in hostilities against government forces,” but stressed that “the recruitment and use of children under 15 years of age as child soldiers is a war crime.”
“Several witnesses, including family members of the boys, told Human Rights Watch that among the militants (…) involved in the attack were dozens of children carrying bandoliers and shotguns (…). Two people from the same family stated that they recognized their 13-year-old nephew among the children,” the NGO reported.
