World number one golfer, North American Scottie Scheffler, was today handcuffed and detained for trying to get past a police barrier erected after an accident on his way to Valhalla Golf Club, home of the US PGA Championship.
According to press reports, Scheffler, who remains in 12th place in the Major after the first round, refused a police officer’s request to stop at the golf club shortly after a traffic accident caused a huge traffic jam.
Video posted to social media site X by ESPN reporter Jess Darlington shows a handcuffed Scheffler getting into a police car.
In the footage, a police officer can be heard saying: “Now he’s going to jail and nothing can be done about it.”
Due to the accident, which resulted in one death, the second day of the tournament was postponed by one hour and 20 minutes.
Scotty Scheffler, who finished the first round of the tournament with 67 strokes, five behind leader Xander Schauffl, is scheduled to start the second round at 10:08 a.m. local time (2:08 p.m. in Lisbon).
