Seven people were injured, one seriously, in an explosion late Friday at the Budyonny Military Academy of Communications in St. Petersburg, Russia.
Information about the explosion is being spread Reuterswhich is quoted by the press of the second Russian city, and has already been confirmed by the state news agency RIA Novosti.
According to this source, the explosion was caused by the detonation of ammunition from the Great Patriotic War, as the Russians call the Second World War.
However, the local press does not agree with this version and admits that the explosion could have been caused by a drone.
According to RIA Novosti, the victims were taken to the medical center of the Ministry of Defense.
The same agency quotes a Russian army spokesman who clarifies that it was “an arbitrary explosion of ammunition from [calibre] 76 mm”.
An official source in the Leningrad Military District (formerly St. Petersburg) claims that the explosion occurred at 20:00 local time (18:00 Lisbon time) “during the cleaning of the warehouse, when they were unloading a garbage container.”
St. Petersburg Governor Alexander Beglov, however, denied it was “terrorist in nature.”
The Budyonny Military Academy of Communications is one of the oldest military schools in Russia, training forces responsible for land communications of the army. It was created in 1919 and became a university in 1998.
