PAN wants to strengthen oversight and support for animal welfare in Madeira

The head of the PAN list for the regional elections in Madeira, Monica Freitas, wants to strengthen control and inspection measures in situations of animal neglect and increase the support of associations in this area.

The candidate, who visited a dog park in Funchal this Sunday, told Lusa that the party intends in the next legislature to strengthen measures such as “vaccination, free sterilization of pets, revision of animal supplier statutes, regulation of the use of animals for certain purposes, to ensure greater control and oversight of negligence situations.”

The measures also include “continuing to provide more support to associations that provide support in these areas,” said Monica Freitas, acknowledging that in Madeira there is already “some awareness” both among the population and in some municipalities.”

Despite this, in his opinion, local authorities should pay more attention to the creation of official animal collection centers.

In his view, the region is “far behind what needs to be done, and this area should be considered as a priority axis, including when thinking about policies and when developing measures.”

In addition to visiting dog gardens in Funchal and Machico, PAN’s Sunday campaign focused on agriculture and local markets such as Santo da Serra (municipality of Santa Cruz).

According to the statement, the party lawmaker also believes that these markets are places of “meetings, passages and memories, which once again shows that agriculture is inextricably linked with culture.”

Therefore, People-Animals-Nature considers it “urgent to improve the space for everyone’s comfort”, as well as “invest in safe agriculture”.

Improving supervision not to “put up more and more barriers” but to “create a sense of security so that markets can flourish” is an urgent measure for Monica Freitas, who was elected in the last regional elections with a score of 2. 31% of votes. .

Effective implementation of the Family Farm Act, with rewards for good environmental practices, food advocacy and environmental health, is also a measure the candidate advocates.

The PAN note states that, among a number of other measures, there should be a commitment to “a circular economy through the creation of an exchange market where producers can use surplus production in a fair and expeditious manner.”

The Madeira Legislative Assembly will take place on May 26, with 14 candidates vying for 47 seats in the regional parliament in one electoral district: ADN, BE, PS, Livre, IL, RIR, CDU (PCP/PEV), Chega, CDS. – PP, MPT, PSD, PAN, PTP and JPP.

The early elections will take place eight months after the last regional legislative elections, after the President of the Republic dissolved the Parliament of Madeira following the political crisis provoked in January, when the leader of the regional government (PSD/CDU-PP), Miguel Albuquerque, was named as a defendant in the process, in during which suspicions of corruption are being investigated.

In 2023, the SDP/CDU coalition won without an absolute majority and elected 23 deputies. The PS received 11 mandates, JPP – five, Chega – four, and the CDU, IL, PAN (which signed an agreement on parliamentary influence with the Social Democrats) and BE received one mandate each.
