The Algarve will only have water until the end of the year

The environmental association Zero warns that “current water supplies in the Algarve can only guarantee public water supplies until the end of the year.” And he views the easing of restrictions on water consumption as “a sign of irresponsibility on the part of the current government.”

According to Zero, “with the summer, the drought situation in the country is expected to worsen, especially in the southern regions.” He therefore believes that since it is not known what the first months of the next hydrological year will be like in terms of precipitation, “the guarantee of supply for the population next year may be called into question.”

“About a month ago, the Portuguese Environment Agency announced that water reserves in the Algarve only have the volume necessary to provide public water supply for one year. Given this situation, Zero views the measures being taken now with great concern. restrictions on water consumption are being lifted, considering this relaxation a sign of irresponsibility on the part of the current government, which appears to be insisting on the usual implementation of short-term measures without a strategic vision of the problem and its possible solutions,” Zero said in a statement.

According to the association, “the new measures announced are a clear concession to pressure from the agricultural sector to increase water supplies.” The decision will increase the amount of water available for agriculture by 13.14 hcm3, 2.65 hcm3 for human consumption and 4.17 hcm3 for tourism.
