Work on the future Ruby (H) line of the Porto metro begins this Saturday in Vila Nova de Gaia. This project will shorten the Edgar Cardoso roundabout over the next two years.
The announcement was made earlier in the week by Metro do Porto, which said that work on the Rubi line (Casa da Música – Santo Ovidio) “is starting on one of the main roads of Gaia”, making Edgar Cardoso The road “will deteriorate greatly in the next two years “.
After the start of the project in Santo Ovidio, which has already led to the demolition of houses for the construction of a metro station that will connect with the Yellow Line (D) and the future high-speed rail line, as well as interventions in Devesas and other less affected areas, a new phase of work will require a number of cuts and restrictions that will affect some city roads.
Thus, this morning it was planned to “cross the left lane up the Candal Viaduct”, and from Saturday to Sunday “traffic will be suspended on the Rotunda Edgar Cardoso – on the street of the same name, also known as VL8”.
“This restriction will remain in force for two years, while access to houses, garages, offices and institutions will always be protected,” states the intervention, “motivated by the construction of a metro channel along this structuring route” and “according to the construction of three stations – Arrábida, Kandal and Rotunda, the latter being uneven and having an underground car park.”
In a statement, the Vila Nova de Gaia City Council also warned of restrictions, stressing, however, that “access to houses, garages, offices and institutions will always be protected.”
According to Metro do Porto, “the work will create restrictions along the entire Via Edgar Cardoso, between the Coimbroes area and the Arrábida junction”, but “along the entire route there are local transport alternatives, properly signposted, ensuring the necessary conditions for local mobility.” in the area,” with “Rua Antonio de Azevedo, next to the Arrábida shopping center,” already “reopened to traffic.”
The global investment value of the Rubi Line (Casa da Música – Santo Ovidio, including the new bridge over the Douro River) is €435 million, an investment financed through the Recovery and Resilience Plan (PRR).
The 6.4 km Rubi Line, with eight stations, includes a new crossing over the Douro River, the D. Antonia Ferreira Bridge, Ferreirinha, which will be dedicated exclusively to the metro, as well as pedestrian and bicycle traffic.
In Gaia, stations planned for the Rubi line are Santo Ovidio, Soares dos Reis, Deveshas, Rotonda, Candal and Arrábida, as well as in Porto Campo Alegre and Casa da Musica.
The project should be completed by the end of 2026.
According to Metro do Porto, the new line will bring “benefits of various types, quantified at 1.7 billion euros and which will materialize, for example, in more than 12 million metro users per year,” of which 10 thousand students will have easy access to Campo. University Center of Alegre: “annual reduction of CO2 emissions [dióxido de carbono] estimated at 17,475.4 tons,” and there are 5.2 fewer cars on the streets every year.
