Construction work at the Santo Ovidio station of the Rubi line of the Porto metro in Vila Nova de Gaia begins on Monday, which will lead to the closure of several streets in the area, according to the city council.
“The Porto metro will open on March 4. [segunda-feira]construction of the new Santo Ovidio station as part of the new line Rubi (H), Casa da Música – Santo Ovidio”, can be read in a note published on the website of the Municipality of Gaia, which Lusa saw this Thursday.
According to the municipality, “during the work period, which is expected to last 12 months, vehicular traffic will be disrupted on Rua António Rodríguez da Rocha, Rua Conde Dom Pedro and Rua Fernão Mendes Pinto.”
However, “changes will be made to the direction of vehicle traffic to guarantee conditions of access for residents, 1st cycle of basic education in Cedro and the parish church of Santo Ovidio.”
“Due to the complete cessation of traffic on Rua Conde Dom Pedro, alternative routes for pedestrians will also be created,” the city council said in a statement.
Work is already visible on the site of residential buildings that will be demolished to make way for a new Ruby Line station, which will connect to the current Yellow Line station and a future high-speed rail station.
Work is also visible on the land adjacent to the residential buildings being demolished.
The global investment cost of the Rubi Line (Casa da Música – Santo Ovidio, including the new bridge over the Douro River) is $435 million, an investment financed through the Plan for Recovery and Resilience (PRR).
The 6.4 km Rubi Line, with eight stations, includes a new crossing over the Douro River, the D. Antonia Ferreira Bridge, Ferreirinha, which will be dedicated exclusively to the metro, as well as pedestrian and bicycle traffic.
In Gaia, stations planned for the Rubi line are Santo Ovidio, Soares dos Reis, Deveshas, Rotonda, Candal and Arrábida, as well as in Porto Campo Alegre and Casa da Musica.
The project should be completed by the end of 2026.
