The former president of the Portuguese Football League was caught on a wiretap during the Apitu Durado investigation.

On Tuesday, following the death of Benfica player Miklos Feher in 2004, Teofilo Santiago was confronted with this process. which later became known as the “Golden Whistle”. In the book “Insubmisso” – excerpts from which morning Post reveals – a former inspector recalls that Valentim Loureiro was caught wiretapping telephone conversations with Justice Minister Miguel Macedo. “In the dialogue, the first insisted (demanded) that Dr. Macedo learn from the SP and as soon as possible the causes and circumstances of Feher’s death,” recalls Teofilo.

It is in this same conversation that Valentim Loureiro talks about “the man from Leiria who was placed in the joint venture.” Dangerous connections that were later revealed during the search. “Between surprise and outrage, Valentim Loureiro screamed and asked the investigators if they knew what was happening. He then made several phone calls that went unanswered. These three phone calls were addressed to the director of DCICEF,” recalls the former inspector, who at the time headed PJ Porto.

Apitu Durado was investigating corruption in football. Valentim Loureiro was the president of the Portuguese Football League as well as Boavista. “Valentin Loureiro’s mobile phone exploded. Telephone taps revealed the old center of favor in football, centered on Major Pinto da Costa and a host of minor figures, as well as in politics. With a mobile phone in his hands, the major was a true connoisseur of the ancient Portuguese art of asking for a jaitinho,” recalls Eduardo Damaso, journalist and co-author of the book launched today at the Lisbon Book Fair.

Then a lot of pressure arose, and the management of Porto, led by Arthur Oliveira, fell. “Dark Day” for the former inspector. “This persecution became stronger and harsher until it came to an ultimatum. The National Director explicitly mentioned that Prime Minister Dr. Durán Barroso wanted/demanded to know by the end of the day who they were and the extent of the participation of politicians in his government, which would have been heard in conversations with the Major,” says Teofilo.
