The new Chief Justice of the Supreme Court defends decisions in courts that are easier to understand

The new Chief Justice (STJ) yesterday warned in his inaugural speech that judicial decisions must be “structured, reasoned and written in a clear manner and that they, when they have or should have a public impact, are communicated in such a way that they are understood by the majority citizens.”

Courts should abandon the “baroque style” of decisions that has led to a “pretentious judicial culture” and strive to apply the law fairly to a particular case, said Counsel to Judge João Cura Mariano.

Joao Cura Mariano understands that justice needs urgent reforms, but not structural ones. “The urgency lies, rather, in a set of sectoral and specific measures, many of which are neuralgic, which allow the judicial system to respond effectively, and that means in a timely manner, to all new demands and challenges,” defended the new president of the Supreme Court.
