The number of overnight stays in European Union (EU) tourism establishments increased by 6.6% in the first quarter, to 452.6 million, compared with the same period in 2023, Eurostat reported this Friday.
According to the EU statistics office, a total of 27 member states recorded 133.9 million tourist overnight stays in January – an increase of 3% year on year, 149.2 million in February (6%) and 165.5 million in March (9%).
Overall, these values are already higher than in 2019, before the Covid-19 pandemic.
Among the Member States, Luxembourg (24.5%) was the country where overnight tourist stays increased the most in the first quarter compared to the same period last year, followed by Cyprus (21.4%) and Malta (19.7%). ).
In Portugal, the number of overnight stays in tourist establishments increased by 6.6% during the analyzed period, at the same rate as in the EU, to 14.4 million.
