GNR confiscated more than 600 kilograms of Japanese shellfish in Alcochete

This Friday, GNR officials confiscated more than 600 kilograms of Japanese shellfish in the municipality of Alcochete, Setubal district, a police source said on Saturday.

The arrest occurred as a result of soldiers patrolling the Alcochete territorial post when they approached a vehicle and discovered that it contained more than 600 kilograms of Japanese shellfish “without mandatory registration and transport documents,” the territorial command said. In a statement by the PNP of Setúbal.

The lack of this documentation “prevented their origin from being determined and whether mandatory traceability standards had been met, raising the possibility that they posed a risk to public health.”

The State People’s Republic identified the 37-year-old man and drew up a report on an administrative offense due to the lack of a registration document.

After a sanitary inspection, the bivalves will be destroyed, the GNR also reports.

The GNR emphasizes that “the capture, storage and shipment of this type of bivalves without cleaning or sanitary controls may pose a risk to public health if they are consumed as food due to possible contamination with toxins.”

Therefore, he warns, “a document confirming the origin is necessary to prevent irregular introduction into consumption.”
