A violent head-on collision between a bus and a truck in Sofala province on Sunday evening killed 23 people and injured 49, according to information released by local authorities.
The accident occurred in Mafambisa, Dondo district, in central Mozambique, when a truck was overtaken, causing the two trucks to collide.
23 people were killed on board the Dondo Public Transport (TPD) bus, while the collision also injured 49 people, all of whom were taken to Beira Central Hospital, seven of whom were in a condition considered serious.
Mozambique has recorded more than 4,800 deaths due to road traffic accidents in the past five years, according to data released May 22 by the Mozambican government, which calls for public participation in the fight against the scourge.
