The Ministry of State (MP) accused the former head of a self-help association with the status of a private institution of social solidarity (IPSS) headquartered in Porto of embezzling more than 48,000 euros from the funeral of members.
The indictment dated January 4, 2023, published this Thursday by the General Prosecutor’s Office of Porto (PGR-P), charges the accused with a qualified breach of trust committed in 2014 and 2015.
“The defendant in 2014 and 2015 confiscated on several occasions the sums received and processed in the department under his head in connection with the funeral of various accomplices, totaling EUR 48,760.60, which he deposited in the accounts he held and spent on his own benefit,” he says.
On its website, the prosecution states that the suspect was the head of the funeral department of a mutual aid association with IPSS status headquartered in Porto, whose name has not been released.
In addition, the duties of the accused official included “conducting the funeral of accomplices, paying for this with the amounts of subsidies to which they were entitled, within the framework of the aforementioned association and others.”
The deputy asks to convict the defendant, and even if he is obliged to pay the state, the amount corresponds to the economic benefit received.
PGR-P recalls that the indictment was filed on September 24, 2020, but the defendant asked for the order to be opened, and the decision was made on November 5, 2021.
However, the deputy did not agree with this decision and filed an appeal with the Court of Appeal of Porto, which, by decision of November 23, 2022, overturned this decision.
