The World Health Organization (WHO) reported this Wednesday that more than eight thousand children under the age of five were treated for acute malnutrition in the Gaza Strip and 28 of them died.
A significant portion of the population of the Palestinian territory – the scene of Israel’s war against the Palestinian Islamist movement Hamas for more than eight months – now faces catastrophic levels of food shortages and conditions close to starvation, WHO Director-General Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus said at a press conference in Geneva, headquarters of a specialized UN agency.
“Despite information indicating an increase in food distribution, at the moment there is nothing to prove that those most in need are receiving food in sufficient quantity and quality,” he stressed.
