Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orbán considered this Thursday “scandalous and unacceptable” the 200 million euro fine and the fine of one million per day imposed by the Court of Justice of the European Union (CJEU) for non-compliance with asylum policies.
“The CJEU’s decision to fine Hungary €200 million plus one million euros per day for protecting the EU’s borders is scandalous and unacceptable,” Orbán wrote on his social media account X.
According to the Hungarian conservative leader, “it seems that illegal migrants are more important to Brussels bureaucrats than their own European citizens.”
The CJEU today ordered Hungary to pay a fine of €200 million and a sanction of €1 million for each day of delay for failure to comply with asylum policy, given that Budapest “deliberately circumvented the application of the EU’s common policy”. – in this case, the admission of applicants for international protection, which, according to the statement, “represents an unprecedented and extremely serious violation of Union law.”
In 2015, the Hungarian government adopted tough policies in the face of the migration crisis caused by the war in Syria, which it still supports.
