The deputy of the Assembly of the Republic, Francisco César, is the only candidate for the leadership of the PS/Azores in the elections scheduled for June 28 and 29, it was announced this Friday.
The Azores Socialists will choose a new leader after Vasco Cordeiro, president of the PS/Açores since 2013, announced that he would not run for office again.
In a press release, PS/Açores said that “after the legal deadline for nominations for the leadership of the party had expired,” the only candidate presented was that of Francisco César, with the motto “A New Future.”
“After an analysis carried out by the President of the Regional Commission for Jurisdiction, Fernando Cordeiro, the candidacy was found to be justified and accepted,” he adds.
According to the report, the PS/Açores leadership elections will be held on June 28 and 29, and the XIX Congress will be held on September 27 and 29 on the island of San Miguel.
Candidate Francisco Cesar said in a statement on Thursday that the socialist formalized the Azores party leadership race that day with “declarations of proposals from more than 400 activists.”
“In presenting his proposal, Francisco Cesar emphasized the importance of building a “new future” for PS Açores, based on three “fundamental” pillars: education for all, transparency and freedom, which are an important component of economic development,” the document says.
In the document, the candidate advocates for the region “a new, diversified, inclusive and sustainable economic model” that integrates differentiators and “invests in value creation in traditional sectors such as agriculture, fisheries and tourism, as well as in the new maritime economy, digital technologies , decarbonization and energy transition.”
Francisco César also emphasizes the importance of human dignity and social justice: “We are a party that believes that the community of which we are part will only be complete when a person has true dignity: dignity in access to work, income, old age, housing and health.
The official presentation of the socialist global orientation movement, entitled “Um Novo Futuro”, is scheduled for Saturday at 18:30 local time (19:30 Lisbon time) at the Michaelense Theater in Ponta Delgada on the island of São Miguel.
Francisco César, 45 years old, has a university degree in economics, is a deputy and vice-president of the PS college in the Assembly of the Republic, and a member of the national and regional secretariats of the party.
The socialist was once a deputy and leader of the PS faction in the Regional Assembly of the Azores.
