The Executive Directorate of the National Health Service (DE-SNS) assured this Sunday that the 12 closed emergency obstetric and pediatric departments work in a network with other units, guaranteeing access to health care for all users.
“These emergency services, which pose some restrictions, have operational internal emergency services and some are equipped to receive emergency cases referred by the Centers for Emergency Patient Care (CODU) of the National Institute of Emergency Medicine (INEM) and the SNS 24 Pregnancy Line,” – says the DE-SNS message.
Within the SNS Obstetrics and Pediatrics Emergency Service, DE-SNS clarifies that “The summer plan previously announced by the government is being carried out without any difficulty and that the 12 emergencies that constitute restrictions this Sunday are in effect in the network from other units, thereby guaranteeing access to healthcare for all users.”
It also highlights that there are 125 emergency services on the Portuguese mainland that are currently open 24 hours a day.
In particular, regarding the emergency gynecology and obstetrics services located in Lisbon and the Tagus Valley region, he states that “the plan of care is being implemented.”
“The three maternity hospitals located on the Setubal peninsula operate on a weekly rotation model, guaranteeing emergency care that is always open to the outside world,” he emphasizes.
In the case of Greater Lisbon, emergency obstetric and gynecological care on weekends is provided through the permanent opening of the Maternidade Alfredo da Costa and Hospital de Cascais, which are supported by the San Francisco Xavier Hospital one weekend a month and the Fernando Fonseca Hospital (Amadora Sintra) another two weekends per month.
DE-SNS adds that in the hospitals of Caldas da Rainha, Medio Tejo and Santarem there is also coordination to alternate between emergency response and obstetrics and gynecology.
“In addition, in the case of obstetric and gynecological emergencies, the Vila Franca de Xira Hospital and the Beatriz Angelo Hospital in Loures also operate alternately,” he adds.
Remember that this plan for the provision of emergency obstetric care in the Lisbon and Tagus Valley region was agreed between the Ministry of Health, the clinical directors and the chairmen of the boards of directors of the participating hospitals in meetings that also included the collaboration of the College of Midwifery. It emphasizes that “strengthening links between hospital and primary care teams, and timely strategic planning of the response” is one of its central objectives.
