Montenegro asks PS and Chegu to join government to “make the right decision”

PSD President Luís Montenegro this Sunday called on the PS and Chegu to “worry less about unification” and rather to join the government to “decide well” on the needs of the Portuguese.

“If the Socialist Party wishes to join Chega or Chega wishes to join the Socialist Party, then the desire of the Social Democratic Party is to unite with Portugal and the Portuguese to solve their real problems,” said the leader of the Social Democrats at the closing of the 28th Social Democratic Youth Congress (JSD) in Lisbon.

The Prime Minister also left one more message for both sides.

“To some we say: worry less about uniting, join the Portuguese, and the best way to join the Portuguese is to join the government to decide well that they are the basic needs in the life of every Portuguese today.”

Luis Montenegro believed that “there are many talkers in the opposition, but there are many doers in the government.”

“We showed that what we said during the election campaign were not just proclamations, but the basis for decisions. We are not here to proclaim, we are here to decide and govern,” he emphasized, receiving loud applause.

In the same sense, the new leader of the FSD, João Pedro Louro, elected at this congress, said that the PS and Chega “are experiencing an affair today,” but warned both parties: “The young people will not forgive them if the implementation of the IRS Jovem is not approved, and if the young man this country will not see an increase in its disposable income due to the blockade organized by PS and Chega.”

Speaking to young people in Praça do Campo Pequeno, the PSD leader said that “today the absolute priority national goal is to give Portuguese youth hope and confidence that they can have a future in Portugal.”

“It is in the interests of young people to maintain connections with their lands, their families, their friends, but it is in the overall interest of the country that our human resources, many of them highly qualified, continue to be at our disposal.” at our disposal and on our side to have a more balanced society and a more dynamic economy,” Montenegro emphasized.

“And through this,” he continued, “we create more wealth, which will pay higher wages and support social policies aimed at helping those who need government assistance during times of greatest vulnerability.”

“In order for us to have sustainable economic growth, for us to have higher wages in Portugal, for us to have guarantees that the welfare state works, we need Portuguese youth in Portugal, working in Portugal, giving everything, and that is there is a lot that we have to give in our country,” he emphasized.

The SDP leader then listed a number of measures taken by the government aimed at young people, such as the proposal to reduce taxation on income from work by a third until the age of 35, exemption from paying council tax on onerous property transfers (IMT) and stamp duty on the purchase of a first home, support for leasing or offering an additional 700 units of housing for university students in the next academic year.

Montenegro’s departure from Campo Pequeno was marked by a moment of unrest when journalists tried to ask questions of the prime minister, but a security guard forcibly removed the television journalist, sparking protests.
