The former Minister of Justice does not know about the intervention of the Portuguese-Brazilian twins being treated in Santa Maria

There was no effect on faster conferment of Portuguese nationality in twins with spinal muscular atrophy treated with Zolgensma. The statement was made on Tuesday by former Justice Minister Catarina Sarmento e Castro as part of a parliamentary commission of inquiry into the case.

During the hearing, which lasted about three hours, Catarina Sarmento e Castro insisted to deputies that at the time of granting citizenship to two children in 2019, she did not hold the position of Minister of Justice, which happened in 2022, and could only answer on the basis of the information provided services of the ministry.

According to the former governor, the process was initiated and instructed at the Sao Paulo Consulate in Brazil, and only then, on September 2, 2019, was it sent to the Institute of Registers and Notaries (IRN), where it will be sent. in 14 days.

“What the services explained to me at the time, based on the investigation they carried out at the time, was that this average period of 14 days was a reasonable average,” said Catarina Sarmento e Castro, also noting that three others similar processes, including for infants, would proceed even faster. One of these processes “began in the system on September 2, and the other two on September 4” and ended on “September 9,” he said, referring to the services of the Ministry of Justice.

Since they are “children of Portuguese parents,” this “opens up a special path within these processes,” the former minister emphasized. He also added that, according to the information provided to him, there was no urgency required in the process of granting Portuguese nationality to the two children and that the average time for completion of these processes in similar cases at the Sao Paulo Consulate “does not exceed more than one month.”

After Catarina Sarmento insistently recalled that the events took place in 2019 and that she took office as Minister of Justice only in 2022, Andre Ventura, the leader of Chegi who proposed the creation of this commission of inquiry, made it clear that he would call for the overthrow of the former incumbent this post to Francis Van Dunem.

Marcelo’s son heard this on July 3rd.
Nuno Rebelo de Sousa, the son of the president of the republic, told parliament that he would be heard by a commission of inquiry into the case of Portuguese-Brazilian twins treated with the most expensive drug in the world at the Santa Maria hospital. via videoconference on July 3 at 14:00. The central player of this whole process, Nuno Rebelo de Souza, will, however, remain silent, not answering any questions, declaring that he is a defendant in the lawsuit, as did the former Minister of Health Lacerda Sales, the first to be heard in this commission. “I invoke my right to remain silent so as not to be accused of facts that may concern me. This is not selective, this is the law, and I follow it,” the former government official said then, refusing to answer questions from deputies. Nuno Rebelo de Sousa began by declaring that he had not provided an explanation to the commission, while the parliamentary groups agreed that if this was confirmed, the Assembly would file a complaint with the prosecutor’s office for insubordination.

Costa guarantees that he will testify before the commission
Former Prime Minister António Costa has announced that he will testify at a parliamentary commission of inquiry into the case of the Portuguese-Brazilian twins. “I am waiting for the Assembly of the Republic to tell me under what conditions I can testify, but of course I will testify if there is such a discussion,” he said. The former chief executive said that he learned about the approval of his hearings through the media. Last week, the SDP, IL and CDS-PP approved Chegi’s request to hold a hearing in the case of the former prime minister.
