In a statement sent to the Luz news agency, the National Republican Guard (GNR) said the suspects, a 19-year-old man and a 24-year-old woman, were arrested this morning through Beja’s traffic and intervention squads.
A source from the NPR’s Beja Territorial Command, who contacted Lusa, said the arrest occurred “at 00:35 at km 161.6 of the A2 motorway” while the two suspects were traveling in a car “to the south/north”. direction”.
According to the statement, as part of a road inspection action on this highway in the south/north direction, “military guards approached a car with two passengers who were behaving suspiciously.”
“During the police action, the suspects were subjected to a personal and power search, as well as a short search of the vehicle,” the report says.
These moves culminated, in addition to arrests, in the confiscation of 33,654 kg of hashish, “the equivalent of 67,308 doses” of the drug, and the vehicle.
The detainees were present today at the first judicial interrogation at the Judicial Court of Beja, which ordered them pre-trial detention, that is, the most serious measure of coercion.
“The woman was taken to the Odemira prison, while the man remained in the Beja prison,” added a police source contacted by Lusa.
Actions included the reinforcement of the territorial units of Almodóvar, Ajustrel and Odemira, belonging to the territorial command of Beja, as well as the means of the territorial commands of Lisbon and Setúbal.
