Portugal has been ranked 15th in Expat Insider’s 2024 ranking of the best countries for people to live abroad, falling five places from last year.
The ranking, which has been compiled by InterNations since 2014 and evaluates 53 countries, is topped by Panama, which rose from third to first place, followed by Mexico and Indonesia.
Only in fourth place does the first European country appear: Spain was considered the fourth best country for foreigners, ranking first in the index measuring quality of life. Colombia rounds out the top five.
Portugal is in 15th place, having dropped in some of the areas assessed in this ranking.
On the one hand, the quality of life (7th place), personal finance (13th place) and ease of integration (15th place) indices continue to show good results for Portugal.
However, the indicator focused on working abroad, as well as the index of factors most important to expats (such as housing, digital services and language) had a worse score, resulting in respondents being ranked worse by their overall happiness in life in Portugal, losing their position in the top 5.
Foreigners living in Portugal complain about the lack of career opportunities, as well as the bureaucracy they face when working in the country.
In the ranking, which included 12,000 people from 175 nationalities, Kuwait came in last place, Turkey was 52nd and Finland was 51st, representing the biggest drop in the index this year, from 16th to 51st, due to difficulties in integration and a poor personal finance score.
InterNations is based in Munich, Germany, and is one of the largest expat communities in the world with over 5.3 million members.
