A gas explosion in a tank near the Faculty of Science and Technology (FCT) in Monte da Caparica, Almada, left one person dead early Thursday afternoon and two seriously injured, he told reporters. CM Fire Chief Trafaria Afonso Rocha.
The deceased was a 25-year-old man.
One of the victims has already been hospitalized at Garcia da Orta Hospital, as recommended by INEM psychologists. The other is still receiving treatment on site. According to Afonso Rocha, they are both very shaken.
“The explosion occurred in a pavilion belonging to Ydreams, a company operating on the FST campus. The pavilion is located far from the company’s main building because it is used to conduct experiments that could compromise safety. The cause of the explosion is unknown,” Fire Commander Trafaria said.
Both the pavilion and the Ydreams building are being checked by GNR’s explosive ordnance disposal team to check whether there is a risk of further explosions.
There are 20 emergency personnel and eight vehicles on site, including firefighters and GNR staff from Trafaria, as well as INEM staff.
