Explosion near the Nova Faculty of Sciences in Monte da Caparica. Two injured

A 25-year-old man died in a gas explosion in a tank next to the Faculty of Science and Technology (FCT) in Monte da Caparica, in Almada, early this Thursday afternoon.

Trafaria Fire Chief Afonso Rocha confirmed this CM that two more wounded are in critical condition.

The injured man, who was admitted to the García de Orta hospital on the recommendation of INEM psychologists, is 51 years old and worked for the company Omnideia, whose premises are located on the FCT campus. According to an official GNR source, the deceased was also an employee of this company.

Another victim is still being treated at the scene. Afonso Rocha said they were both very shaken.

“The explosion occurred in a pavilion belonging to Ydreams, a company operating on the FST campus. The pavilion is located far from the company’s main building because it is used to conduct experiments that could compromise safety. The cause of the explosion is unknown,” Fire Commander Trafaria said.

Both the pavilion and the Ydreams building are being checked by GNR’s explosive ordnance disposal team to check whether there is a risk of further explosions.

There are 20 emergency personnel and eight vehicles on site, including firefighters and GNR staff from Trafaria, as well as INEM staff.
