The National Institute for Disaster Management (INGD) announced on Sunday that the death toll from floods in southern Mozambique rose from four to six since Tuesday.
The last two deaths concern two people who died on Saturday in a house collapse in the Boane district, Wilson Manik, an INGD technician, said at an emergency committee meeting, quoted by Rádio Moçambique.
The Boane area is located 30 km south of Maputo, the capital of Mozambique, and was one of the hardest hit by heavy rains and discharges from the Pekenos-Libombos dam.
According to INGD, one of the main needs is the urgent need to provide humanitarian assistance, such as food, to people taking refuge in shelters.
On Saturday, according to INGD, 422 people were registered at the centers, but this Sunday, the organization’s leaders acknowledged that the number could be much higher.
These residents, who have taken refuge in the centers, are the most vulnerable group of the entire population affected by the floods.
Louise Meke, president of INGD, said this Sunday in the village of Boane that the total number of casualties (that is, any damage that needs to be reported) has risen to 36,700, equivalent to 7,300 families with the same number of homes. with damage.
According to the person in charge, the figures represent a preliminary balance, given that despite the fact that the rain has already eased, many areas remain under water.
As for the means of communication, according to the authorities, there are 270 kilometers of difficult roads and trails.
