According to a letter sent to parliament, President of the Republic Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa is planning a state visit to Estonia from 6 to 9 October.
In a letter addressed to the President of the Assembly of the Republic, José Pedro Aguiar-Branco, on Friday, the head of state asks for the consent of the parliament for this state visit, for which he asks for the appointment of deputies representing parliamentary groups.
This trip precedes another one, to Krakow, Poland, for the 19th informal meeting of the Arraiolos Group, which will take place from 10 to 11 October, for which the head of state is also seeking parliamentary authorisation.
In another letter, Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa asks deputies to agree to travel to Paris from the 25th to the 27th of this month to attend the opening of the Olympic Games.
Estonian Prime Minister Kaja Kallas today formally resigned to take up the role of High Representative of the European Union for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy.
This Baltic country, a member of the European Union and NATO and bordering Russia, is currently headed by Alar Karis.
The previous President of Estonia, Kersti Kaljulaid, visited Portugal on a two-day state visit in April 2019.
Estonia will be the 20th country to host Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa on a state visit, after Mozambique, Switzerland, Cuba, Cape Verde, Senegal, Croatia, Luxembourg, Mexico, Sao Tome and Principe, Greece, Egypt, Spain, Angola, China, Côte d’Ivoire, Italy, India, Ireland and Belgium.
The Arraiolos Group, an initiative launched in 2003 by then Portuguese Head of State Jorge Sampaio, annually brings together non-executive presidents from European Union member states.
Estonian President Alar Karis took part in the last meeting of the Arraiolos Group, which took place in October last year in Porto, one of the main topics of which was support for Ukraine in the war in defense against the Russian Federation.
The consent of the Assembly of the Republic for the visit of the head of state is a formality established by the Constitution, which establishes that the President of the Republic cannot be absent from the country without the permission of Parliament.
