Donald Trump said Monday that the reality of his escape from assassination was “just now starting to sink in.” “I should have been dead, I shouldn’t have been here,” he told the Washington Examiner in his first interview since Saturday’s attack. “The incredible thing was that I turned my head at that exact moment… I was saved by God or luck,” he said, admitting that the bullet that grazed his right ear could have killed him.
As for his reaction immediately after the attack, when he refused to leave the stage immediately and raised his fist, telling his supporters to “Fight!” he said he knew it was an important moment. “I felt the energy coming from the audience, they were there. It’s hard to describe, but I felt like the whole world was watching me. I knew that History would judge this moment and that I had to tell people that I was okay,” he said.
The former president also said he considered delaying his trip to Milwaukee for two days to attend the Republican National Convention, but decided “no shooter or would-be assassin would make me change my plans.” He did, however, decide to change his speech scheduled for the convention’s final day on Thursday. “It was supposed to be a fantastic speech, but this is an opportunity to unite the country, even the world. My speech will be very different from the one I gave two days ago.”
