18 Portuguese referees, managers and judges ‘called’ to 2024 Paris Olympics

Nearly two dozen referees, judges and other Portuguese officials will be present at the 2024 Paris Olympics competing in 11 sports, joining the 73 Portuguese athletes who managed to qualify.

Experienced Jorge Salcedo will referee the track and field competitions in Paris in 2024 for the sixth time, his third in a row, and after his debut in Sydney 2000, he was only unable to attend London 2012.

The President of the Portuguese Volleyball Federation, Vicente Araujo, will be in charge of the beach volleyball competitions, as was already the case in London 2012, Rio 2016 and Tokyo 2020.

Also in beach volleyball, José Casanova will oversee refereeing at the Paris Games as a member of the Competition Control Committee, while Rui Carvalho will join the panel of referees after having already officiated at the London 2012 Olympic final.

Paulo Duarte is a regular at World Sevens tournaments and has been appointed as a referee for a Rugby Sevens game at the Olympic Games for the second time following his debut at Tokyo 2020.

In addition to volleyball, three Portuguese competitors will also be taking part in the equestrian events: Manuel Carvalho Martins will be a member of the jumping jury, Dinário Seromenho will be a show jumping and dressage steward, and João Paulo Marques will join the veterinary team.

In amateur events, Pedro Silva will be the technical delegate, João Vitor Costa will serve as the “national technical official” and Nuno Botelho will be the referee for the rowing events.

Alvaro Souza will judge the men’s artistic gymnastics, while João Oliveira will do the same in the trampoline competitions, and Miguel Amaral and Manuel “Ken” Gamito will take part in the sailing regattas.

Gonçalo Saldanha has been appointed to the surfing organisation’s medical team, Luis Liberato Baptista as a technical member of the International Swimming Federation and Rui Lucena as a member of the modern pentathlon appeal jury.

The Olympic Games Paris 2024 will be held from July 26 to August 11.
