Portugal is set to make a “strong political commitment” to security and police cooperation at a ministerial conference between European Union (EU) member states and the Middle East and North Africa (MENA) in Lisbon on Tuesday.

MAI said in a statement that Portugal will host the first ministerial conference between EU member states and MENA countries on Tuesday at the Centro Cultural de Belém in Lisbon, a meeting dedicated to strengthening police cooperation and strengthening relations. between the two blocs, with the participation of four dozen delegations.

According to the MAI, this conference is the result of the conclusions of the debates held at the EU-MENA High Level International Conference in May 2021 during the Portuguese Presidency of the Council of the EU, during which common challenges were identified and the need was identified to strengthen police cooperation in order to better prevent and respond to security challenges common to both regions.

The ministry, led by José Luis Carneiro, specifies that the policy dialogue between participating countries and agencies will focus on topics such as preventing and combating organized crime, information sharing and criminal analysis, and improving existing communication channels.

“In operational terms, it is assumed that the strengthening of police cooperation will contribute to the creation of mechanisms to prevent and combat such phenomena as human trafficking, illegal arms and drug trafficking, radicalization and recruitment, as well as the commission of terrorist acts. territories of the participating States,” he points out.

MAI also mentions that Portugal intends to make at this ministerial conference “a firm political commitment – the Lisbon Declaration – for a process of regional political dialogue on security and police cooperation supported by a large number of MENA countries, the EU, European agencies and institutions, the Council of Ministers of the Interior of the League Arab States and Interpol.
