The European Union’s (EU) High Representative for Foreign Affairs Josep Borrell said on Thursday that the bloc does not recognize the “democratic legitimacy” of Nicolás Maduro as president of Venezuela.
Nicolás Maduro “remains president, it is true, but the EU does not recognize his democratic legitimacy based on the election results,” Josep Borrell said at a press conference following an informal ministerial meeting in Brussels.
On Thursday, Portuguese Foreign Minister Paulo Rangel said the Communities bloc would not recognize Nicolás Maduro’s legitimacy for a third term due to the lack of verification of the electoral protocols by independent sources.
