The National Inspectorate of Economic Activities (INAE) of Mozambique intends to strengthen food safety surveillance by training 30 specialists in the inspection and monitoring of fortified foods in an action that began this Monday in Maputo.
“The training will include several presentations and debates on the activities carried out in the different provinces, the challenges faced and future prospects in the field of food fortification,” INAE explained in a statement, adding that agents from the central and southern regions of Mozambique will participate in the event.
It will train 30 inspectors “in national food fortification standards, harmonize inspection methods and practices, and ensure the food industry complies with established standards,” the department added.
“The training will include several presentations and discussions on the activities carried out in various provinces, the challenges faced and future prospects in the field of food fortification,” he said, adding that topics such as food safety and inspection procedures in various areas will be covered with a view to improving inspection methods and ensuring the quality of fortified foods available in the market.
“For many years, Mozambique has been facing a serious problem of chronic malnutrition, which affects a large part of our population, especially children and women. The future of our country. In this context, food fortification becomes an important strategy,” explains Ana Rita Freitas, Inspector General of INAE, quoted in the statement.
Ana Rita Freitas also stressed the need for strict and effective supervision in the food industry to ensure compliance with food fortification standards.
“We must ensure that all Mozambicans have access to safe and nutritious food,” he stressed.
In 2013, Mozambique launched the National Food Fortification Programme, which involves adding small amounts of vitamins and minerals to foods during industrial processing.
Food fortification in Mozambique is mandatory for producers of maize and wheat flour, sugar, edible oil and salt under Decree No. 9/2016, while rice fortification is voluntary.
