A fire in the garage of a five-story building in Abrantes, Santarem district, forced the evacuation of residents on Tuesday and left eight people slightly injured, a civil protection source told Lusa.
The fire alarm was raised at 8:30 p.m. and the building was evacuated as a precaution after the fire reached the garage of the five-story building, a source from the Medio Tagus subregional command explained.
Six civilians were injured due to smoke inhalation and two firefighters were treated for exhaustion, he added.
All victims were treated for minor injuries and taken to Abrantes Hospital.
A source from the Medio Tejo subregional command said at 10:45 p.m. that firefighters were ventilating the building so that residents could return to their homes, without knowing at that time whether the fire had caused the need to relocate any residents.
During the incident, 36 combatants were mobilized, supported by 15 vehicles. In addition to the firefighters from Abrantes, corporations from Constancia, Sardol, Gaviana and Barquinha were at the scene in ambulances.
Representatives of the PSP and the municipal civil protection also arrived at the scene.
