On Tuesday, thousands of users suffered the first day of a doctors’ strike called by the National Federation of Doctors (Fnam). The cancellation of consultations and operations caused serious difficulties in medical centers and hospitals across the country. The strike continues on Wednesday.
“I waited a year for a consultation for a dermatological analysis, I had no idea that the consultation was going to be cancelled, they only told me about it during the consultation,” a user of the Faro hospital told CM.
In Coimbra, the neuropediatrics and anesthesia departments in the university hospitals have closed at 100%. In Covoines, the internal medicine department has registered 90% compliance. In the north, at the São João Hospital in Porto, the central block has closed at 100% this morning, the neurosurgery block at 75%, and the obstetrics block at 66%. At the Hospital dos Capuchos in Lisbon, the general block has registered 60% compliance.
“What is really important and what the Ministry of Health should think about is that every postponed consultation or surgery disrupts the lives of patients. The responsible party is the Ministry of Health, which does nothing to guarantee more doctors in the SNS,” said Joana Bordalo e Sa, president of Fnam.

The doctors’ strike is being carried out at around 70%, while in a number of regions of the country, operations and appointments have been cancelled, Fnam reports.
