The Portuguese Professional Football League (LPFP) and the clubs it represents said on Wednesday that they agree with the usefulness of the government’s proposals to soften the impact of the new legislation regarding immigration.
“The protocol presented by the government represents a significant step in resolving the restrictions caused by the legislation concerning immigration,” the LPFP said in a statement.
A day after the meeting with the LFP board and the participants of the I and II leagues discussed the government’s proposal on Decree-Law No. 37-A/2024, which affects the transfer market, as a result of which some proposals were made to improve the transfer market document.
After listening to its members, the League “sent to the government some proposals with a view to greater speed and efficiency in the application of the submitted protocol and then to observing the necessary formalities for its signature and immediate entry into force.”
The organization recalls its activity in establishing contacts with the various entities with public responsibility in this matter, “to express concerns about the adverse effects” of Decree-Law No. 37-A/2024 in terms of the speed of recruitment of foreign players, but also “to propose and demand solutions that, without calling into question the assumptions recommended by the new law, would minimize the corresponding impact on the sector and on the clubs.”
“All the efforts made have led to the creation of this protocol, which respects and values the specificity of the sector and the freedom of clubs to develop their activities in the transfer market, in fair and loyal competition with other players, including international ones,” the LPFP welcomes.
The decision presented by the government to the League and various sports federations will allow the Agency for Integration, Migration and Asylum (AIMA) to conclude agreements with several sports federations to speed up the issuance of residence permits for athletes from non-EU countries.
