A fire broke out this Monday on Rua Manuel Pinto de Azevedo, in the industrial area of Porto, at Auto Sueco, representative of Volvo and other brands.
The alarm was received at 13:42. 147 personnel from the Porto Fire and Rescue Service are on the scene, supported by 52 vehicles and INEM.
According to Civil Protection Lieutenant Colonel Carlos Marquez, Auto Sueco was “completely destroyed.” The fire has been contained and no casualties have been reported. Carlos Marquez also claims that the fire started in the offices and spread to other areas. The security perimeter remains in place.
People were soaking nearby buildings to prevent the fire from spreading. Explosions were heard.
The fire can be seen from the centre of Porto.
Rua Manuel Pinto de Azevedo and Avenida AEP in the south-north direction were closed to traffic.
A source from Porto Firefighters Sapadores told Lusa that they still have no information on casualties, the number of people evacuated from the building, or the cause of the fire.
According to the municipal police, Porto firefighters, Portuense volunteer firefighters and the São Mamede de Infesta volunteer firefighting unit (Matosinhos) are at the scene.
“For now, the operatives’ objective is to contain the fire only on the perimeter of Auto Sueco,” the Porto City Council said in a note, in a battle that is being hampered by “the wind blowing from the south,” according to the Zapadors.
