The President of the European Commission said this Wednesday that the tenth package of sanctions against Russia for its military aggression against Ukraine will for the first time apply to Iranian organizations, including those associated with the Revolutionary Guards, for their “brutal” support for the Kremlin.
Speaking before the European Parliament in Strasbourg, France, during the February 24 debate on the “first anniversary of the Russian invasion and aggressive war” in Ukraine, Ursula von der Leyen said the European Union will continue to “weaken Russia’s ability to maintain its war machine and disclosed some of the sanctions envisaged in the tenth package, which is currently being discussed with Member States.
The new package, which will have a global impact of around 11 billion euros, will include “new trade bans and new technology export controls to Russia”, namely “export restrictions on numerous electronic components used in military systems”. The Russians are like drones, missiles, helicopters.”
“But there are also hundreds of Iranian drones used by Russia on the battlefields in Ukraine. These Iranian-made drones are killing civilians in Ukraine, and this is monstrous. Therefore, for the first time, we propose to impose sanctions against Iranian organizations, including those associated with the Revolutionary Guards. We are obliged to impose sanctions on them and confront Iran in connection with the supply of drones and the transfer of “know-how” for the construction of production sites in Russia,” he said.
