Guards at the Caxias prison in the municipality of Oeiras prevented a woman from handing over drugs to her son, who was in pretrial detention at the prison. The woman was transferred to the PSP for custody.
The illegality was discovered during a visit on Tuesday morning. Guards on duty at the site were told by their colleagues running the prison’s CCTV centre that a woman had just given drugs to her son. Family members were approached and the prisoner, a 25-year-old man on remand for misusing a guarantee or credit card, denied having any drugs. A strip search yielded no results, prompting guards to use the CCTV again. That’s when the drugs could be seen hidden inside the prisoner’s trainers. A dozen hashish acorns weighing a total of 77 grams.
Contacted CMFrederico Morais, president of the National Union of Prison Guards, highlighted the “excellent professionalism of prison guards in the fight against drug trafficking in prisons.”
