Supreme Court Accepts Maduro’s Request to Certify Venezuelan Election Results

Venezuela’s Supreme Court has accepted President Nicolas Maduro’s request to confirm the results of Sunday’s presidential election, which saw him re-elected but which the opposition is disputing.

The court will begin “a process of investigation and verification to validate without limitation the results” of Sunday’s elections at the request of Venezuela’s president, the president of the Electoral Chamber, one of the six chambers that make up the Supreme Court (STJ), announced Thursday in an address to the country broadcast on state television.

The official noted that the ten candidates in the election – Nicolás Maduro, Luis Martínez, Edmundo González, Daniel Ceballos, Antonio Ecarri, Benjamín Rausseo, Enrique Márquez, Jose Brito, Javier Bertucci and Claudio Fermín – are scheduled to appear before the STJ this afternoon (local time).
