“She lived in hell for many years, she was attacked since they lived in Guinea, but she got free and he did not accept it.” The person speaking is Claudia Barrento, one of Aimone dos Santos’ best friends, who was killed with a shotgun by her partner last Sunday in Pego, Abrantes. CMsays her friend was controlled step by step, from the CCTV cameras in her home to the clothes she wore. “He would pick her up and take her away, he wouldn’t let her do anything, and she just wanted to be free,” he says.
TO CMJessica Freud, the couple’s neighbour, says “I heard a lot of arguments, especially at night”. João dos Santos left the house but continued to insist on a relationship, and there were hundreds of messages. “At first he said he liked her, but if the answer was no, he would insult her. He didn’t want anything to do with his children. He got it into his head that she belonged to him, and if she wasn’t his, she wouldn’t belong to anyone else,” says Claudia Barrento. Unhealthy jealousy was at the heart of the arguments and alleged attacks.
