UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer made it a priority on Monday to secure a “swift” conviction for rioters involved in violent clashes in recent days after chairing a crisis meeting in Downing Street.
Speaking to British television, the Labour leader stressed that his “absolute” priority was ending the unrest and that “criminal sanctions must be swift”.
Starmer, speaking at the end of a meeting of the Cobra emergency committee, which brought together ministers, police and security chiefs to review the unrest and take action if it continues in the coming days, insisted those responsible for the weekend violence were being held accountable.
