On Tuesday, Mozambique’s National Electoral Commission (CNE) determined the positions on the ballot papers for the October 9 general elections, with the parliamentary party Democratic Movement of Mozambique (MDM) taking first place.
The draw also determined that the ruling Mozambican Liberation Front (Frelimo) party would take second position and the Mozambican National Resistance (Renamo), the largest opposition party, would take third position.
The three parties currently represented in parliament occupy the initial positions on the ballot papers, as required by law.
“After the draw, there will be a stage of producing the ballot papers for the President of the Republic, the Assembly of the Republic and the provincial assemblies,” Paulo Quinica told the media shortly after the draw, which took place in Maputo.
The CNE presented the positions of a total of 37 political parties on a day when airtime was also allocated for electoral propaganda in the media, as part of a campaign that will last from the 24th of this month to October 6.
Paulo Quinica then stated that the amount for the election campaign had not been contributed and should have been distributed 21 days before the start of the campaign.
The CNE plans to provide 260 million meticais (3.8 million euros) to parties, political groups and presidential candidates in the October 9 general elections, Paulo Quinica Lucé said in June.
According to the CNE calendar, campaign disbursements are scheduled to occur between June 28 and August 31.
Without naming the amount, the CNE spokesman also said the electoral body was still recording a deficit in the budget allocated for the electoral process in Mozambique, noting that work was underway to resolve the issue.
“We are responsible for what we do. We are working and we believe that the Ministry of Economy and Finance is also working to find money so that they can cover the entire amount related to the electoral process,” said Paulo Quinica.
Mozambique will hold presidential elections on October 9, which will be held simultaneously with legislative, gubernatorial and provincial assembly elections.
