On Thursday, the health minister announced a decision that waiting lists for cancer operations had exceeded the maximum recommended time, and accused anyone who said emergency measures were not being followed of “bad faith”.
At the end of a visit to the Santa Maria Hospital in Lisbon, in which she accompanied the President of the Republic, Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa, and the Prime Minister, Luís Montenegro, the Minister of Health, Ana Paula Martins, stated that as of April 30, there were 9,374 cancer patients on the waiting list, and in four months, about 20,000 patients had undergone surgery.
The minister stressed that “for the first time it was possible” to eliminate the queue for cancer patients waiting longer than the recommended period for surgery.
