Organization revises Olympic closing ceremony script to avoid new controversy

Thierry Reboul, who is in charge of organising the closing ceremony of the 2024 Olympic Games in Paris, has admitted that he was forced to revise the script several times after the controversy surrounding the drag show presented at the opening of the edition.

“They made us reread the entire program again to make sure there was no misinterpretation,” he said, according to the newspaper. Guardian.

Like artistic director Thomas Jolly, Thierry Reboul has assured that the presentation featuring drag queens at the opening ceremony was not inspired by the painting The Last Supper, but rather by a 17th-century Dutch painting of the Greek gods of Olympus. However, due to the negative reactions from the religious community, political leaders and internet users, Reboul admitted that he has become more reserved about possible misinterpretations after receiving several death threats.

A performance featuring transvestites at the opening ceremony of the Olympic Games has gone around the world. The presentation was immediately perceived as a satire on the work of Leonardo da Vinci, and the Catholic Church considered it a “mockery of Christianity.” Initially, the Olympic organization apologized for the presentation, but later the creative director explained that it was never the intention to create a satire on the religious moment presented in the film.

“You will never find in me the desire to ridicule or denigrate anything. I wanted to hold a ceremony that would correct and reconcile. And would confirm the values of our Republic,” he assured, as quoted by the newspaper. Le Figaro.
