An earthquake measuring 3.4 on the Richter scale was recorded in the Algarve.

An earthquake measuring 3.4 on the Richter scale that struck the Algarve this Sunday, with its epicentre about 30 kilometres south of Albufeira, was felt but did not cause any personal or material damage.

The Portuguese Institute of the Sea and Atmosphere (IPMA) has updated the initial information, now reporting that the earthquake, recorded at 5:48 a.m., “was felt with a maximum intensity of III (modified Mercalli scale).”

The institute said the quake “did not cause any personal or material damage,” stressing that information would be updated if the situation required it.

According to the organization, determining the location of an earthquake’s epicenter is a “complex physical and mathematical process that relies on a set of data, algorithms, and seismic wave propagation models,” so “different agencies may produce slightly different results.”
