Covid-19 cases worldwide increased by 30% and deaths by 26% between June 24 and July 21, the World Health Organization (WHO) said, providing data for the most recent reporting period.
According to WHO, 186,000 new cases of Covid-19 and more than 2,800 deaths were registered between June 24 and July 21, representing an increase of 30% and 26%, respectively, compared to the previous period from May 27 to June 23.
The organization notes that the figures should be interpreted with caution due to reduced diagnostic testing and genetic sequencing of the coronavirus (and its variants and subvariants) that causes Covid-19, as well as notification delays in many countries.
According to the UN agency, 95 countries have reported infections and 35 deaths have been recorded.
During the same period analyzed, from June 24 to July 21, more than 23,000 hospitalizations and more than 600 new admissions to intensive care units were recorded, representing an increase of 11% and 3%, respectively, compared with the period 28 days prior.
Higher numbers of hospitalizations and intensive care unit admissions were reported, mainly in Europe and the Americas.
A week ago, the WHO warned of a rise in Covid-19 cases worldwide, considering them “unlikely” to decline in the short term and the risk of a more severe variant emerging.
According to the World Health Organization, new waves of infection have been recorded in Europe, America and the western Pacific Ocean.
Covid-19 is a pandemic respiratory disease caused by the SARS-CoV-2 coronavirus, which was discovered in late 2019 in China and quickly spread throughout the rest of the world, taking on several variants and subvariants, some more contagious than others.
The vaccines in circulation mostly prevent serious illness but not infection.
Since May 2023, Covid-19 has ceased to be an international public health emergency (highest alert level).
