Thermal reservoirs in San Miguel to reopen, but one remains closed

Two thermal pools on the island of Sao Miguel in the Azores will reopen to the public after being closed due to microbiological contamination. One is closed.

According to the Regional Secretariat of Health of the region, the results of the analyses of the “Poça da Dona Beija and Terra Nostra swimming pools show a significant reduction in the concentration of the microbiological agent (reduction of more than 95%) compared to the first sampling” and in line with the second sampling”.

The two sites are now reopening to the public, but with new safety measures in place. Showers will be installed at access points to the thermal reservoirs, and exploration agencies will step up the sending of samples for analysis.

Caldeira Velha remains closed. “In Due to the necessary measures taken there, the health authorities’ assessment will only be carried out next week, after a new collection of samples on site,” the Azores authorities explained in a note.
