The municipality of Torres Vedras has launched the “Pedalar sem Aged” program, which sends citizens with reduced mobility and the elderly to ride adapted bicycles driven by volunteers, the municipality announced this Friday.
The “Cycling Without Age” project aims to “contribute to the fight against unwanted loneliness and social isolation of older people and people with reduced mobility through regular trips on adapted bicycles,” according to a press release from the Lisbon District Administration.
“Not only to give years of life, but to give life to years,” said Social Action adviser Ana Umbellino, quoted in the press release, arguing that society must create conditions for people to feel fulfilled at all stages of life.
The bicycles are driven and pedaled by volunteers trained by Associação Pedalar Sem Age Portugal.
“His example will certainly help to strengthen the culture of participation and civic commitment to a society in which everyone, regardless of age and status, finds their place,” the mayor added.
As Lusa was informed by the municipality, the project, which was carried out on the 13th, includes a bicycle and already has 10 volunteers.
“Bike rides without age” will take place in August and September on the beach of Santa Cruz and from October to March in the city of Torres Vedras, by prior arrangement of interested parties.
In August, at the experimental stage, experimental tours are planned for the 22nd and 27th.
After the pilot period, the project will maintain a weekly frequency “subject to the availability of volunteers on certain days to be determined by the municipality.”
